Robotic Knee Replacement

CT-planned, robotic-arm precision for end-stage knee arthritis — sub-millimetre implant alignment, gentler soft-tissue handling and a faster return to walking. Performed by a Singapore fellowship-trained surgeon.

Robotic Knee Replacement at Osteon Orthopedic Hospital, Pimple Saudagar, Pune

What it is

Robotic knee replacement combines a 3D plan built from your own CT scan with a precision-guided cutting tool that carries out that plan to within sub-millimetre accuracy. The surgeon plans, supervises and operates — the robotic arm simply holds every bone cut inside tolerances tighter than the human hand can reliably keep.

For most patients this means more accurate implant alignment, less collateral tissue damage, and a noticeably faster early recovery than manual instruments allow. Dr. Kalambe Patil completed his international fellowship in robotic joint replacement in Singapore and uses computer-assisted planning for the majority of his knee arthroplasty cases.

Conditions it treats

  • Severe osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Bow-leg (varus) and knock-knee (valgus) deformity
  • Post-traumatic arthritis of the knee
  • Inflammatory and rheumatoid arthritis affecting the knee
  • Failed previous knee surgery (revision replacement)

What to expect

1

CT-based planning

A pre-op CT builds a 3D model of your specific knee. Implant size, alignment and position are planned digitally before the day of surgery.

2

Robotic-arm execution

The arm physically prevents bone cuts from straying outside the planned path — sub-millimetre accuracy on every cut.

3

Real-time knee balancing

Ligament tension is tracked through trial motion so the knee is balanced from data, not from feel.

4

Same-day mobilisation

Most patients stand within 4-6 hours and walk a few steps with a walker by the same evening.

5

3-4 night hospital stay

Each day the walking distance increases under guided physiotherapy.

6

Structured recovery

Cane-free walking by week 3-4, normal daily routines by week 6, full recovery by 3-4 months.

Common questions

Is robotic knee replacement actually better than manual surgery?
For most patients, yes — particularly for early function and implant longevity. The robotic system enforces the surgical plan more precisely than freehand instruments. Dr. Kalambe Patil will tell you honestly when a manual technique is equally appropriate for your knee.
Does cashless mediclaim cover robotic knee replacement?
Yes. Most major TPAs and insurers cover robotic knee replacement under their orthopedic surgical benefits. The front desk verifies coverage and handles cashless paperwork before admission.
How soon can I walk without support?
Most patients transition from walker to cane around week 2, and to no support by week 3-4. Stairs without holding the rail typically come around week 6.
Can both knees be replaced at once?
Yes, simultaneous bilateral robotic knee replacement is an option for suitable patients whose general health allows it. Dr. Kalambe Patil will advise whether doing both knees together or one at a time is safer for you after reviewing your fitness and X-rays.
